What is a Habitat? Let’s Explore!
A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives. It’s their home—where they find food, water, shelter, and space to grow. Habitats can be as vast as an ocean or as small as a patch of forest under a fallen log. From icy polar regions to warm tropical rainforests, every living thing has a special place where they belong.
A closer look reveals that habitats are full of connections. Animals depend on plants, weather, and each other in ways that create a delicate balance. Even the smallest creature plays an important role in its environment. Teaching children about habitats opens their eyes to these connections, helping them understand how amazing—and important— the world really is.
A Semester of Wild Wonders: Why Habitats?
“Discovery & Play, Nature’s Way!” That’s our Mantra at Wild Child: Museum & Menagerie, and the basis of everything we do— from our Supervised Play groups and camps, to facilitating a museum where families can come together and do just that! This semester, we wanted to create a space where young learners can explore the world beyond their own backyard. This is where Ms. Rosie, Wild Child’s Founder and Executive Director, came up with the BRILLIANT idea of Habitat Exploration!!
Let’s talk about how we incorporate habitats into Pre-K Learn & Play: Habitat Exploration, and Animal Kingdom Afternoons: Habitat Chats. We will “travel” to different habitats around the world, discovering the animals that live there, the climates they adapt to, and the ways we can help protect them through conservation. One week we may be rocketing to the International Space Station (our galaxy’s most out-of-this-world, man-made habitat), and the next migrating through the Arctic Tundra as a herd of Caribou! Each lesson is designed to spark imagination and connection.

Everyone gets a round-trip ticket and a Passport that gets stamped for each location they travel to, which will make a great keepsake to take home and show-off all of our achievements this semester!

Pre-K Learn & Play: Habitat Exploration

My name is Ms. Heather, and I instruct the Pre-K Learn & Play: Habitat Exploration Supervised Play Group! There is something truly special about teaching young children. Everything is exciting and worth exploring. Their questions are big, their imaginations bigger, and the possibilities are endless at Wild Child: Museum & Menagerie! It’s a place where learning feels like play, curiosity is encouraged, and children are free to touch, make, discover and GET WILD! The atmosphere at Wild Child allows me to teach in a way that feels alive—full of movement, creativity, and meaningful moments. Teaching isn’t just about sharing knowledge—it’s about building connections, encouraging confidence, and creating a love of learning that lasts a lifetime!

Fifteen minutes of free-play is how we start the day! Wild Child at it’s best! Child-led play: nurturing friendships, climbing in the tree house, or playing games. Commence to the “watering hole,” where I introduce that day’s lesson, often led by a relevant song or storybook!

Next is craft time: my favorite part of the day!! Many of our crafts involve repurposing recycled goods, or using items found in nature. We often incorportate a lot of the “messier” things that we don’t always get to do at home like paint, glitter, beads, glue, scissors, etc.!

Wild Child provides a snack for each Supervised Play group, and we always try to make it relevant to that day’s lesson. In this picture you can see the makings of what turned out to be edible owls!

Class ends with an immersive activity such as an interactive game, STEM exercise, or outdoor exploration allows us to apply the skills we’ve learned about today’s habitat and the animal adaptations!

Animal Kingdom Afternoons: Habitat Chats

Habitat Chats offers a combination of child-led exploration and instruction, featuring a special science lesson introducing a new habitat each week and all the animals who call it home! Habitat Chats is a Supervised Play group offered on Tuesdays and Fridays. Families have the option of booking extra time with our “Homeschool Hangout” offering to stay and play after we’ve finished the lesson for the day. This in tandem with our daily Animal Kingdom Afternoon program which is designed for families seeking a safe, stimulating place for their children to stay & play after school.
This Supervised Play group is led by Ms. Rosie, our founder and executive director. Ms. Rosie really knows how to GET WILD. Her energy and momentum are contagious and she will have the class laughing, singing, dancing, and becoming fully enthralled in each and every lesson.
